New Regulations Aim to Enhance Faculty Recruitment and Evaluation Standards in Higher Education
The University Grants Commission (UGC) has released the draft for the Minimum Qualifications for Appointment and Promotion of Teachers and Academic Staff in Universities and Colleges for 2025.
UGC Chairman Mamidala Jagadesh Kumar emphasized the need for a holistic approach in evaluating faculty members, recognizing them as the backbone of educational institutions.
The new regulations shift from a purely quantitative evaluation system to a more inclusive framework. Notably, candidates with an undergraduate degree and Ph.D., or a master’s degree and Ph.D., can now apply for positions without taking the UGC-NET.
However, those with master’s degrees in non-professional programs, such as Arts and Social Sciences, will still need to pass the UGC-NET to qualify for Assistant Professor roles.
In a significant change, candidates with engineering master’s degrees, like ME and M.Tech, will be exempt from the UGC-NET requirement, allowing them to apply directly for Assistant Professor positions in engineering and technology programs.
