CUK’s DCJ Observes ‘Indian Newspaper Day’ with Insightful Lecture

The Department of Communication & Journalism (DCJ) at the Central University of Kashmir (CUK) marked Indian Newspaper Day with an engaging online lecture featuring Prof. Sanjeev Bhanawat, a distinguished academician and former Head of Journalism at the University of Rajasthan, Jaipur.

The event commenced with a warm welcome by Dr. Arif Nazir, Head of DCJ, who encouraged students to actively participate in the discussion. Expressing gratitude to the Hon’ble Vice Chancellor, Prof. A. Ravinder Nath, he acknowledged the VC’s unwavering support in fostering academic discourse.

AI and the Future of Journalism

Delivering the keynote address, Prof. Sanjeev Bhanawat delved into the evolution of newspapers in India, their contemporary significance, and the impact of Artificial Intelligence (AI) on journalism. He highlighted both opportunities and challenges, including declining print readership, fake news, credibility concerns, and technological adaptation.

Prof. Shahid Rasool, Dean, School of Media Studies, emphasized the critical role of newspapers as catalysts for societal change. He cautioned against the declining credibility of media, citing issues such as trivialization, commercialization, and commodification of news.

VC’s Message: Ethical Journalism is the Need of the Hour

In his message to students and scholars, Hon’ble Vice Chancellor, Prof. A. Ravinder Nath, underscored the historical significance of Indian Newspaper Day, urging future journalists to uphold ethical and fact-based reporting in an era of rapid information shifts.

The event concluded with a Vote of Thanks by Dr. Nookaraju, who expressed appreciation to the Vice Chancellor, keynote speaker, faculty members, and participants.

With enthusiastic participation from students, scholars, faculty, and alumni, the session wrapped up with a dynamic Q&A session, leaving attendees with valuable insights into the evolving media landscape.
