SRINAGAR: The Election Commission of India announced on Monday that it is ready to hold assembly polls in Jammu and Kashmir, and that the Union Territory recorded the highest voter turnout in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections in the last four decades.

Addressing a press conference in New Delhi to provide an overview of the marathon seven-phase 2024 general elections that concluded on June 1, Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar, said that the commission is prepared to hold assembly polls in Jammu and Kashmir.

He said that Jammu and Kashmir recorded the highest voter turnout in the 2024 Lok Sabha polls in the last four decades, with an overall percentage of 58.58, while the Kashmir Valley recorded a 51.05 percent turnout.

He also mentioned that there were no major incidents reported during the polls anywhere in the country, including Jammu and Kashmir.

The seven-phase Lok Sabha polls concluded on June 1, with votes to be counted tomorrow. On June 1, exit polls predicted a landslide victory for the PM Modi-led NDA, with the alliance poised to win over 350 seats.

Meanwhile, all arrangements have been put in place with heightened security measures for the counting of votes across the country, including Jammu and Kashmir.

For Jammu and Kashmir, most exit polls predicted the National Conference to win all three Lok Sabha seats in the Kashmir Valley, the BJP to win two seats in the Jammu division, and the Congress to win the lone Lok Sabha seat in Ladakh. (KNS)
