Defunct Solid Waste Management Shed Turns into Dumping Yard in Lar.

A Solid Waste Management (SWM) shed constructed under the Swachh Bharat Mission (SBM) in 2022–2023 at Lar Block Halqa Lar A and B in Central Kashmir’s Ganderbal district has turned into a dumping yard, drawing concern and frustration from local residents.

The facility, built at a cost of Rs 5.89 lakh, was intended to process and manage solid waste in the area. However, residents allege that the shed has remained non-functional since its construction, and has now become an eyesore and a serious health hazard.

According to locals, the abandoned structure has become a breeding ground for stray dogs and a hotspot for dumping unsegregated waste, posing a significant threat to public health and sanitation.

“This shed was meant to manage waste and improve cleanliness, but instead, it has become a source of pollution and a nuisance,” said a resident of the area.

The continued neglect of the facility has led to widespread environmental concerns, with nearby residents facing the brunt of the foul smell, increased presence of stray animals, and fear of disease outbreaks.

The residents have appealed to the district administration and concerned departments to take immediate action to restore the shed’s functionality and address the pressing issues caused by its abandonment.

“We request the authorities to intervene urgently and make the shed operational to safeguard public health and the environment,” another local resident urged.
