In a significant move, the Jammu and Kashmir Cabinet, chaired by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, has unanimously passed a resolution urging the Union Government to restore the statehood of Jammu and Kashmir. This resolution is seen as a crucial step towards initiating a healing process and reaffirming the constitutional rights and unique identity of the region’s residents.
The Cabinet convened on Thursday, and the resolution highlights the commitment of the newly elected government to safeguard the rights and identity of the people of Jammu and Kashmir. It articulates a vision for restoring statehood in its original form, emphasizing that such a restoration is essential for rebuilding trust and fostering a sense of belonging among the populace.
The Chief Minister has been authorized to engage directly with the Prime Minister and other Union Ministers to advocate for the restoration of statehood. This development reflects the ongoing dialogue surrounding the political status of Jammu and Kashmir since the revocation of its special status in August 2019, when the region was reorganized into two Union Territories: Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh.
An official spokesperson for the government stated that the Chief Minister’s visit to New Delhi is imminent, during which he will discuss this pressing matter with key government officials. The Cabinet’s resolution underscores that the protection of Jammu and Kashmir’s unique identity, along with the constitutional rights of its people, remains central to the administration’s policy agenda.
In addition to the statehood resolution, the Cabinet has announced that the Legislative Assembly will convene in Srinagar on November 4, 2024. The Lieutenant Governor has been advised to summon and address the Assembly during its first session. The draft address prepared for the Lieutenant Governor’s address was presented to the Council of Ministers for further discussion.
Moreover, the Council has recommended the appointment of Mubarik Gul as Protem Speaker, who is tasked with administering the oath to the newly elected Assembly members on October 21, 2024. Following this recommendation, the Lieutenant Governor has formally appointed Gul to this position until a Speaker is elected.
This series of developments marks a pivotal moment in the political landscape of Jammu and Kashmir, as the new government seeks to address the aspirations of its people and restore a sense of normalcy and democratic governance in the region. The Cabinet’s resolution for statehood restoration is expected to resonate widely and may influence future discussions on the political status of Jammu and Kashmir at the national level.
