New Delhi: Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah met Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi on Thursday.
This meeting marks Abdullah’s first visit to New Delhi since assuming office last week following his party’s significant win in the recent assembly elections.
In the polls, Abdullah’s National Conference secured 42 out of 90 seats, marking the first assembly elections in the region in a decade. Shortly after forming the government, the new cabinet passed a resolution calling for the restoration of Jammu and Kashmir’s statehood, a move considered vital for reinstating constitutional rights and safeguarding the region’s unique identity.
Abdullah has been authorised to advocate for this issue with the government of India, a step also supported by J&K’s Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha.
Earlier in the day, Abdullah met with GoI’s Minister of Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari, discussing various road connectivity projects in Jammu and Kashmir.
Abdullah also presented Gadkari with a traditional Kashmiri shawl as a gesture of goodwill.
The previous day, he held a brief meeting with Home Minister Amit Shah.
