From Kashmir to Lucknow: Innovator Cultivates Saffron Indoors Using High-Tech Aeroponics

LUCKNOW: In an inspiring breakthrough, a resident of Lucknow has brought the exotic spice of saffron to the heart of Uttar Pradesh, leveraging advanced aeroponic techniques to replicate the Kashmir climate in his indoor farm.

Hemant Srivastava, 38, a former US corporate professional, embarked on this ambitious journey after being captivated by videos showcasing saffron cultivation. His determination led him to travel to Kashmir, where he engaged with local farmers to master their traditional methods.

Realizing the land constraints in Lucknow, Srivastava transformed his vision into reality by creating a state-of-the-art indoor farm in Vijayant Khand, Gomti Nagar. Utilizing an air-conditioned space, he employs aeroponics—where saffron bulbs are suspended in the air, receiving nutrients directly to their roots without soil or excess water.

“This technique allows us to mimic the cool climate of Kashmir while maximizing our space through vertical farming,” Srivastava explained. His innovative approach not only challenges the norms of saffron cultivation but also showcases the potential of modern farming technology in urban settings.

In his unique setup, saffron bulbs are initially placed in soil for nutrient absorption, then kept in darkness for two months before being exposed to light, ensuring they receive all the necessary wavelengths for optimal growth.

While the initial investment for this small-scale saffron farm ranges from Rs 7 lakh to Rs 10 lakh, Srivastava’s pioneering efforts are set to make waves in the agricultural community, proving that with creativity and perseverance, the impossible can become possible.
