Anantnag:Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Wednesday visited Anantnag in Jammu and Kashmir, a day after a terror attack in the Pahalgam area left several tourists dead and injured. Shah, who was directed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to personally oversee the situation, paid tribute to the victims before heading to the Government Medical College (GMC) Anantnag to meet those injured in the attack.
The tragic incident occurred in Pahalgam on Tuesday, where terrorists opened fire on a group of tourists, leading to multiple casualties. In response, security forces swiftly launched a large-scale search operation in the Baisaran forest area, where the attackers are believed to have fled.
Shah, who arrived in Srinagar yesterday evening, immediately chaired a high-level security meeting to assess the situation and coordinate the government’s response. The meeting was attended by senior officials from the Intelligence Bureau, Ministry of Home Affairs, Jammu and Kashmir Police, and other central and state security agencies.
During the meeting, Shah reviewed intelligence inputs and operational plans to ensure that the perpetrators are swiftly apprehended. He also emphasized the need to tighten security in sensitive tourist zones and increase intelligence surveillance in the region.
This morning, Shah visited Pahalgam, the site of the attack, to directly assess the ground situation. He was briefed by senior officers on the progress of the search operation and the measures being implemented to prevent such incidents in the future.
Shah interacted with the injured tourists and assured them of the best medical care. He also conveyed the central government’s commitment to supporting the victims and their families. “We will not rest until justice is delivered. The entire nation stands with the families of those affected,” Shah stated.
The attack has drawn widespread condemnation across the country. Political leaders, civil society groups, and local residents have united in expressing their grief and calling for stringent action against those responsible.
Security has been tightened across Jammu and Kashmir, especially in tourist-heavy areas, and additional forces have been deployed to maintain law and order. The government has reiterated its resolve to eliminate terrorism from the region and ensure the safety of all citizens and visitors.
