Unchecked growth of Russian poplar trees poses serious health risks to public and Central University of Kashmir community

Ganderbal: Students, employees, and residents of the Ganderbal district have raised serious concerns over the widespread growth of Russian poplar trees (Populus deltoides), urging the Deputy Commissioner (DC) Ganderbal, Mr. Jatin Kishore, to enforce existing government directives to cut down these trees across the district.

Members of the Central University of Kashmir, particularly those from the Department of Media Studies, have reported increasing health issues believed to be caused by the pollen released from these trees.

“In our class of 13 students, eight are currently suffering from fever, cough, watery red eyes, fatigue, headaches, and runny noses,” said one media student. “This university has been operating for more than a decade, yet no one seems to care about the health of students or the residents of Ganderbal. We appeal to the DC to take immediate action and remove these trees.”

Local residents echoed the students’ concerns, stating that entire households have fallen ill, and vulnerable populations are especially at risk.

“We are all falling sick in our homes. People are afraid to step outside. In our neighborhood alone, five elderly people with asthma are facing severe complications,” said one local resident. “We strongly urge the DC to initiate a district-wide operation to fell these harmful trees without delay.”

Citizens are hopeful that prompt action will bring much-needed relief and help restore public health in the region.
