Bandipora, May 6: A footbridge collapsed overnight in the Shahdipora area of north Kashmir’s Bandipora district, close to the Shahdipora-Ganderbal boundary, triggering widespread concern among local residents.

The incident, which fortunately did not result in any injuries, has been blamed on alleged negligence by the concerned authorities. Residents claim that despite repeated pleas over the years, no official from the relevant department—including Junior Engineers (JE) or higher officials—ever visited the site to assess the bridge’s condition.

“This has shattered our hopes,” said one resident, expressing deep frustration. “The bridge was in a deteriorated state, but no one took our concerns seriously.”

Locals further revealed that the demand for a proper and safe bridge had been pending for years, stressing its importance for both Shahdipora and Ganderbal residents. The collapse, they said, has only highlighted the long-standing neglect and lack of basic infrastructure.

The residents have now urged the concerned department and the local MLA to launch an immediate investigation and ensure accountability. They also called for swift reconstruction of the footbridge to restore safe passage for commuters.
