Pahalgam: Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah Tuesday stated that tourism needs to be regarded as a conflict-neutral activity and not as an index of normalcy. Addressing a press conference following a special cabinet meeting in Pahalgam, he denounced the April 22 terror attack in which 26 tourists were killed and reiterated the government’s resolve towards peace and development.
The conclave, conducted away from the erstwhile capitals Srinagar and Jammu, was a clear indication that the government will never be deterred by terror. “This is not a routine meeting but a robust message that we won’t be intimidated by violence,” Abdullah said.
In a message on ‘X,’ his office posted that it was not just a routine administrative exercise but a clear message: “We are not intimidated by cowardly acts of terror. “The enemies of peace will never dictate our resolve. Jammu & Kashmir stands firm, strong, and unafraid,” it said.
Abdullah also said that he had spoken to Prime Minister Narendra Modi at a recent meeting of NITI Aayog and was assured of complete support to restore tourism. The plans have a security audit of tourist spots and opening in a phased manner.
The chief minister urged public sector units (PSUs) and parliamentary committees to convene meetings in Kashmir to boost the local economy and restore confidence. He added that discussions are on to give financial relief to stakeholders in the tourism sector who have incurred losses.
A special session of the assembly on April 28 also denounced the attack and committed to maintaining peace and communal harmony. Abdullah wrapped up by stating the government is unflinching in its attempt to build Jammu and Kashmir and won’t exploit tragedy for political purposes. Abdullah reiterated that rebuilding trust and ensuring safety are top priorities. He stressed the importance of collective resolve to overcome fear and restore confidence among visitors. Highlighting the government’s long-term vision, he said efforts will continue to protect livelihoods, promote peace, and ensure that Jammu and Kashmir remains open and welcoming to all.
