Srinagar: The University of Kashmir is gearing up for a historic alumni meet on July 27, which will be graced by a constellation of high-profile dignitaries, including Chief Justice of India Bhushan Ramkrishna Gavai, Supreme Court justices Surya Kant and Vikram Nath, Union Minister for Minority Affairs Kiren Rijiju, J&K Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, and Chief Minister Omar Abdullah.

This is the first-ever alumni gathering of its kind since the university’s inception in 1948, and the event has drawn an overwhelming response from former students across the globe. University Registrar Dr. Naseer Iqbal confirmed that hundreds have registered to attend. “Though some may not make it due to logistical issues, we plan to hold such reunions in the future to include more alumni,” he said.

Given the high-profile nature of the event, security has been significantly heightened around the venue. Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kashmir V K Birdi chaired a high-level meeting at the Police Control Room on Wednesday to review and finalize the security plan.

According to an official police statement, Birdi has instructed teams to intensify surveillance around key venues, enhance coordination among security agencies, and implement an effective traffic management plan to ensure smooth movement of both dignitaries and the general public.

The University of Kashmir, originally part of the University of Jammu and Kashmir before bifurcation in 1969, is located in Hazratbal, Srinagar. Its picturesque campus sprawls across 247 acres, flanked by Dal Lake to the east and Nigeen Lake to the west. It comprises two main campuses, Hazratbal and the iconic Naseem Bagh, known for its majestic centuries-old chinar trees that attract scores of visitors during autumn.
