The Jammu and Kashmir Police on Tuesday announced a major breakthrough in the Sehpora Ganderbal murder case, stating that the victim’s elder sister has been arrested for killing the minor girl, a revelation that has stunned the entire area. The case, which initially sparked protests and anger in the area, has left residents stunned.
SSP Ganderbal Khalil Ahmad Poswal told reporters on Tuesday that the body of the minor girl was found near her home on Sunday morning. At first, it was believed that both sisters had gone missing together and may have been kidnapped. A Special Investigation Team (SIT) was formed, and forensic experts from Srinagar were called in to assist.
However, forensic findings soon changed the course of the probe. “The deceased had clutched hair in her hands, which suggested a scuffle,” SSP Poswal said. Investigators then focused on the elder sister, who initially misled the police with false statements but later confessed.
According to police, the elder sister admitted that a quarrel broke out with her younger sibling in a nearby field. In a moment of rage, she struck her on the head with a rod, leading to her death. She later tried to conceal the weapon, which has since been recovered by police. The accused has been taken into custody, and a case has been registered under Section 103 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Forensic samples from the scene have also been collected for further examination.
SSP Poswal said the incident was not just a crime but also a reminder of the need for greater social awareness. He urged religious leaders and educated members of society to guide the younger generation towards patience and peaceful ways of resolving conflicts. “Police will always support such initiatives,” he added.
The killing has left the residents of Sehpora shaken. Many villagers expressed disbelief over the fact that a sibling quarrel could end in such a tragic loss of life.
Police said further investigation into the case is underway.
