Srinagar: The Anti-Corruption Court Srinagar on Wednesday convicted retired IAS officer Habibul Hassan Beigh, former member of the J&K Special Tribunal, sentencing him to one year of imprisonment and imposing a fine of ₹15 lakh in a long-pending corruption case.
The verdict was announced by Additional Special Judge Anti-Corruption Court Srinagar, Faizan-ul-Haq Iqbal, in connection with FIR No. 22/1997 registered at Police Station Vigilance Organisation Kashmir (now ACB Srinagar). The case, filed on April 24, 1997, accused Beigh of amassing disproportionate assets in the form of movable and immovable property during his service.
Investigations by the Vigilance Organisation confirmed the allegations with oral and documentary evidence. Subsequently, a charge sheet was presented before the court on November 13, 2000. After years of trial, the court held Beigh guilty under Sections 5(1)(e), 5(2) of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 2006, read with Sections 12 and 14 of the J&K Public Men & Public Servants Declaration of Assets Act, 1983.
The Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) said the case was successfully argued by Senior Prosecuting Officer Wajahat Jameel on its behalf.
