Public advisory
Across Kashmir, Police have appealed to citizens to avoid unnecessary travel during extreme weather conditions. Stay away from riverbanks, nallahs, and waterlogged areas. Immediately report hazards such as fallen trees, landslides, or electrocution risks.

Background
Jammu and Kashmir has been reeling under the impact of continuous heavy rainfall over the past several days, triggering flash floods, landslides, and waterlogging across both regions of the Union Territory. A deadly landslide on Tuesday near the Vaishno Devi shrine in Katra killed at least 32 people.

The downpour has not only disrupted normal life but also raised fears of another large-scale disaster, with major rivers including the Jhelum, Chenab and Tawi flowing above the danger mark.

Several low-lying areas in Srinagar and other districts have reported inundation, forcing residents to move to safer locations. Connectivity too has taken a major hit, with key highways blocked by landslides and bridges damaged by swollen streams.

In view of the worsening situation, the administration on Thursday ordered the closure of all schools, colleges and universities across Jammu and Kashmir. Officials said the decision was taken as a precautionary measure to ensure the safety of students, particularly in areas prone to flash floods and landslides.

The rains have also damaged infrastructure on a large scale, with reports of collapsed bridges, washed away roads and disrupted water and electricity supplies in multiple districts. Rescue teams from the police, State Disaster Response Force and the Army have been pressed into service in the worst-hit areas, while advisories have been issued urging people to avoid unnecessary travel. Many villages in south Kashmir and hilly areas of Jammu have seen partial evacuations as authorities brace for the possibility of further rainfall in the coming days.

This fresh spell of extreme weather comes close on the heels of the devastating cloudburst in Kishtwar earlier this month, which killed over 65 people and left dozens missing.
