The final chapter of heartbreak closed on Monday as the seventh body of a Kashmiri worker was pulled from the landslide debris in Himachal Pradesh’s Kullu district. The young men, who had left their homes in Bandipora and Ganderbal to earn a living, never returned alive—swallowed by the mountain that gave way under days of merciless rain.

Rescue teams braved treacherous weather and crumbling terrain for nearly a week, gradually recovering one body after another. Each coffin flown to Srinagar carried not just mortal remains but the shattered dreams of families waiting in anguish. The last body, now set to be airlifted, marks the end of a desperate search and the beginning of a long mourning for the villages that lost their sons.

Community elders and grieving families are pleading that such lives, spent in the hardest labour far from home, be protected with real safety measures—so that survival, not tragedy, is what their journeys yield.
