SRINAGAR: Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) leader and legislator Waheed Parra on Monday strongly criticised the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly Secretariat for publishing the detention notice of MLA Doda, Mehraj Din Malik, under the Public Safety Act (PSA).

The lawmaker from Pulwama described the move as a “shameful surrender” and alleged that endorsing PSA against an elected representative amounted to an attack on democratic institutions.

Assembly Secretariat endorsing PSA against an elected MLA is a direct assault on democracy. J&K CM Omar Abdullah must act, don’t allow the institution of MLA, the last agency of the people, to be silenced. Today it’s Mehraj, tomorrow it could be you,” Parra wrote.

His remarks came shortly after the Assembly Secretariat issued a bulletin, conveying the District Magistrate Doda’s intimation that Mehraj Din Malik had been booked under the PSA for activities deemed prejudicial to public order.

Parra’s criticism reflects growing unease in political circles over the detention of the sitting legislator, with calls emerging for transparency and accountability in the handling of the case.
