Srinagar: After remaining closed for over two weeks, traffic movement on the Srinagar-Jammu National Highway was finally restored on Tuesday, bringing major relief to fruit traders, growers, and thousands of commuters who had been facing severe hardships.

Officials said the road remained blocked for more than 15 days due to continuous landslides and shooting stones at several vulnerable spots, leaving hundreds of vehicles stranded and causing heavy losses to the horticulture sector. The prolonged closure had sparked concerns among apple traders whose perishable produce was stuck in transit.

On wednesday , SSP Rural Ravinder Paul Singh and SP National Highway Sh. Mumtaz Bhatti, along with traffic DySPs and DTIs, supervised the reopening of the highway. They ensured that stranded traffic was cleared in a systematic manner and stressed that smooth flow of vehicles would be maintained in the coming days.

Authorities urged drivers not to overtake and to move in line to avoid fresh traffic snarls. Officials assured that every effort will be made to prevent further disruptions and to facilitate the timely movement of fruit-laden trucks towards Jammu.

The reopening has been hailed as a huge relief for Kashmir’s growers and traders.
