Rejects BJP alliance, vows to fight peacefully for restoration of statehood while inaugurating vital water supply schemes in Anantnag.

Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Monday reiterated his firm stand against forging any political alliance with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), even if it were to pave the way for the restoration of Jammu and Kashmir’s statehood. Speaking at a public gathering in Anantnag, Abdullah said he would prefer to step down rather than compromise on the core political identity of the region.

“After the elections, I had two options to run the government. The first was to include the BJP, but we did not. I would prefer to resign rather than include BJP in my government,” Abdullah declared. “If inclusion of BJP will help restore statehood, then take my resignation and make any other MLA the Chief Minister but I will not compromise.”

The Chief Minister, addressing supporters, stressed that his party would continue its struggle for restoration of statehood through democratic and peaceful means. “Some people asked me to protest, but I told them to look at the situation in Ladakh. I am not ready for bloodbath or devastation. We will fight for our rights, but our fight will remain democratic,” he said.

Abdullah’s remarks come at a time when the issue of statehood remains at the centre of political discourse in Jammu and Kashmir. By ruling out any political compromise with the BJP, he sought to reassure his supporters that the National Conference would not dilute its stand for the sake of power.

Earlier in the day, Abdullah inaugurated multiple water supply schemes in Anantnag district under the Public Health Engineering (PHE) and Jal Shakti Department initiatives. The projects are aimed at transforming the drinking water infrastructure of the region and will provide safe and clean water to thousands of residents across both rural and urban areas.

Officials said the schemes will benefit households, schools, and health facilities, significantly improving the quality of life for local communities.

The twin focus of Abdullah’s visit development through infrastructure projects and an uncompromising political stand on statehood underscored his attempt to balance governance with the larger political aspirations of the people.
