Govt Plans to Repeal MGNREGA, Introduce New Rural Employment Law

SRINAGAR: The government is reportedly preparing to repeal the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) and introduce a new legislation for rural employment titled the Viksit Bharat Guarantee for Rozgar and Ajeevika Mission (Gramin) – VB-G RAM G Bill, 2025.
A copy of the proposed bill states that it aims to establish a rural development framework in line with the national vision of Viksit Bharat 2047.
Under the bill, every rural household whose adult members volunteer for unskilled manual work would be provided a statutory guarantee of 125 days of wage employment per financial year.
The legislation also seeks to promote empowerment, economic growth, convergence of development schemes, and overall resilience of rural India.
Officials said the new framework aims to modernize rural employment provisions while ensuring greater efficiency and transparency in implementation. (KNC)
