Stakeholders optimistic as higher reaches receive fresh snowfall following prolonged dry spell.

Srinagar: Fresh snowfall across the higher reaches of Kashmir has brought much-needed relief and optimism to the Valley’s tourism sector, which has witnessed a difficult year marked by security concerns and weather-related disruptions.

Moderate to heavy snowfall was recorded in several upper areas, including prominent tourist destinations such as Gulmarg and Sonamarg, ending a prolonged dry spell. The snow has once again transformed these resorts into major attractions, raising hopes of improved tourist footfall during the ongoing winter season.

The tourism industry had suffered a major setback following the April 22 terror attack at Baisaran meadows in Pahalgam, in which 26 tourists lost their lives. The incident severely impacted tourist arrivals and dented confidence at the start of the peak season.

As the sector began showing signs of recovery, heavy rains during August and September caused flood-like conditions across many parts of Jammu and Kashmir, while repeated closures of the Srinagar–Jammu National Highway further affected travel plans. The situation was compounded in November after security-related developments outside the region led to a decline in tourist movement to the Valley.

However, officials and tourism stakeholders say a sustained promotional drive by the Union Territory administration, coupled with favourable winter conditions, is gradually restoring confidence among visitors.

The recent snowfall has delighted tourists visiting the Valley. “This is our first visit to Kashmir and experiencing snowfall here feels magical,” said Sangeeta, a tourist from Jaipur. “We feel fortunate to be here at this time.”

Ritika, a tourist from Delhi, said the snowfall enhanced their stay. “The atmosphere is very good and people here are very welcoming,” she said.

Several visitors said they had planned their travel according to the weather forecast issued by the India Meteorological Department. “We scheduled our trip keeping the snowfall forecast in mind, and everything went as planned,” said Kartik, a tourist from Maharashtra. He added that he felt safe during his stay in Kashmir and encouraged others to visit.

Local tourism stakeholders have welcomed the snowfall as a positive development. Riyaz Ahmad, a tourism associate, said the first snowfall of Chillai Kalan was crucial for the winter season. “This snowfall has raised hopes. If weather remains favourable, tourist arrivals are expected to increase,” he said.

Residents dependent on tourism-related activities are also optimistic. Gh Hassan, a pony owner from Sonamarg, said snowfall brings livelihood opportunities. “When tourists come to see snow, we get work. This year, we are hopeful things will improve,” he said.

With winter firmly setting in and tourist resorts turning white, the Valley’s tourism sector is once again looking forward to a better season.
