Jammu Kashmir: Three Mobile Phones Seized in Jail, Probe Ordered

SRINAGAR: Authorities have launched an investigation after three mobile phones were recovered during a search operation inside the high-security district jail in Rajouri, triggering fresh concerns over prison security in Jammu and Kashmir
According to official sources, the search was carried out by multiple teams under the supervision of the jail administration following specific intelligence inputs. The seized devices, which did not contain SIM cards, have been sent to a forensic laboratory for further examination.
A case has been registered, and investigators are probing how the phones managed to enter the premises despite a three-tier security system. “The jail premises are digitally secured with jammers, and it is claimed that no mobile network is available inside or near the compound. But the suspected use of phones indicates the jammers could also be compromised,” a source said.

This incident adds to a series of breaches reported in recent years. On 24 July this year, a smartphone was recovered from an undertrial prisoner at Kotbhalwal Central Jail in Jammu. In January last year, a smartphone was seized from a Lashkar-e-Toiba terrorist lodged in prison, while in July 2021, 12 mobile phones, SIM cards, and other electronic gadgets were confiscated from inmates.
Officials said surveillance is being tightened, and further searches are expected to prevent similar lapses.
