NEW DELHI : A powerful explosion near the historic Red Fort on Monday evening claimed at least 13 lives and left over two dozen injured, officials said. The blast occurred around 6:45 pm near the Red Fort Metro Station, at a busy traffic signal where several vehicles were waiting.

According to initial reports, the explosion originated from a car carrying multiple occupants, which suddenly went up in flames, triggering a massive fire that engulfed nearby vehicles. Eyewitnesses described scenes of panic, with people running for safety as the blast shattered windows and sent debris flying across the area. Several parked cars were gutted in the explosion, and the sound was heard several kilometres away.

Rescue teams, fire tenders, and police rushed to the spot. The injured were immediately shifted to LNJP Hospital and other nearby facilities. The area has been sealed off as forensic experts and the Delhi Police’s Special Cell investigate the cause. Officials are probing whether an improvised explosive device (IED) or a gas cylinder triggered the blast.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed deep grief over the incident, stating, “Condolences to those who have lost their loved ones in the blast in Delhi earlier this evening. May the injured recover at the earliest. Those affected are being assisted by authorities. Reviewed the situation with Home Minister Amit Shah Ji and other officials.”

Union Home Minister Amit Shah said he would personally visit the blast site and the hospital shortly to assess the situation and ensure all necessary support.
