New Delhi: Investigators have confirmed through DNA testing that Dr Umar Mohammad, a faculty member at Al Falah University in Faridabad, was driving the Hyundai i20 that exploded near the Red Fort metro station on Monday evening, killing thirteen and injuring more than two dozens .

According to top sources cited by NDTV, forensic experts compared remains recovered from the charred vehicle—bones, teeth, and fabric fragments—with DNA samples obtained from Dr Umar’s mother and brother. The match was conclusive, establishing that he was inside the car when the blast occurred.

Police sources revealed that the explosion took place around 6:52 p.m. on a busy road near Red Fort, creating panic and setting nearby vehicles on fire. Initial reports suggested the car contained a large quantity of explosives, which detonated suddenly. Investigators from the Delhi Police Special Cell and the National Investigation Agency (NIA) are jointly probing whether the blast was accidental or part of a larger terror conspiracy.

Dr Umar’s family members were detained soon after the explosion for questioning. Investigators are examining whether he had connections with two other doctors from the same university—Dr Muzammil Shakeel and Dr Adil Rather—who were earlier arrested in Faridabad following the recovery of about 3,000 kilograms of explosives and chemicals from two residential buildings.

Sources say that after news of those arrests reached him, Dr Umar may have panicked while transporting explosive material. Whether he intended to flee or stage an attack is still under investigation.

CCTV footage has captured the car entering Delhi hours before the blast, and forensic teams are analyzing residue to identify the nature of the explosives used. The NIA is also tracking Dr Umar’s recent communications, financial transactions, and movements to determine possible links to terror networks operating in Jammu and Kashmir.

Authorities have tightened security across the capital and major installations in north India as investigations continue.
