Iltija Mufti Protests Pahalgam Rail Line, Slams Govt Silence

PDP spokesperson and senior leader Iltija Mufti on Wednesday staged a peaceful protest at Wullerhama in Pahalgam against the proposed railway line, alleging that the project threatens Kashmir’s fragile ecology and the livelihood of thousands of farmers and orchardists.
Addressing media , Mufti questioned the National Conference (NC) government’s silence despite having 50 MLAs and six MPs. She also raised concern over journalists allegedly being asked by police to furnish written bonds, calling it an attempt to curb press freedom. “The Chief Minister remains silent while journalists are being pressured and people’s voices are being suppressed,” she said.
Highlighting the environmental risks, Mufti said the proposed railway line would pass through fertile agricultural and horticultural land in areas like Shopian and Pahalgam, potentially damaging orchards and productive fields that sustain local families. “We are not against development, but development should not come at the cost of poor people’s livelihoods,” she added.
She said the PDP organised the protest to stand in solidarity with farmers and residents. “We are here for a peaceful protest in support of farmers. The government must come, talk to the people, and hold proper consultations before taking such decisions,” she said.
Mufti further remarked that while the government talks about connectivity and development, it is simultaneously taking away the means of survival for vulnerable communities. She urged authorities to reconsider the project and adopt a people-centric and environmentally responsible approach.
