Illegal Constructions Continue Along Nallah Sindh Despite Court Directions; Locals Allege Selective Action in Ganderbal

Despite clear directions from the court to remove illegal structures along Nallah Sindh, several constructions at Mammer in central Kashmir’s Ganderbal district continue to remain untouched, raising concerns among locals over alleged selective enforcement.

Residents said that while the administration had demolished a number of structures along the riverbanks a few months ago, several other buildings are still standing, allegedly in violation of norms. They claimed that the drive was not carried out uniformly.

Illegal construction unbeaten in Nallah Sindh “The department is aware of this issue, so why is it turning a blind eye? Is there any nexus between the department and the contractors?”

Some locals alleged that certain constructions were spared due to the alleged involvement of influential persons and claims of bribery. “Action was taken against a few, but many illegal structures are still intact. There should be equal implementation of the law,” they said.

The river, which is prone to flooding and erosion, has witnessed increasing encroachments over the years, prompting judicial intervention to safeguard its banks and prevent environmental degradation.

Officials, however, maintained that action against illegal constructions is an ongoing process and said that further steps would be taken as per court orders.

Locals have urged the district administration to ensure transparent and fair implementation of the directions to prevent further encroachments and protect the river ecosystem.
