In a major logistical shift, the Food Corporation of India (FCI) has started dispatching rice and wheat supplies for Leh and Kargil from Anantnag Railway Station marking the first time food grains for Ladakh are being routed through Kashmir.
The development was announced by L Chatru Naik, General Manager of FCI for Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh, during a press briefing. He stated that earlier, essential supplies were transported from Punjab and Jammu via longer routes, which were time-consuming and operationally challenging.
Naik explained that with the recent start of train-based goods movement in Kashmir nearly two months ago, supplies initially began reaching the FCI godown at Mir Bazar. However, shifting stocks from there proved hectic due to distance, handling issues, and security checks, as a CRPF camp located nearby often caused delays in clearance.
“To overcome these challenges, we have now inaugurated today a new weighbridge point near Anantnag Railway Station, making the process more efficient,” he said. The new facility will serve as a key hub for supplying rice and wheat to North Kashmir as well as the Ladakh region, including Leh and Kargil.
The initiative is expected to streamline the transportation process, reduce delays, and ensure timely delivery of essential food grains to remote and high-altitude areas. This shift not only improves supply chain efficiency but also reduces dependence on traditional routes, marking a significant step forward in strengthening food distribution networks in Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh.
