In a tragic turn of events that shook the tranquil valleys of Kashmir, a brutal terror attack in Baisaran, Pahalgam claimed the lives of 26 innocent tourists. Amidst the chaos and horror, a local hero, Nazakat Ahmad Shah from Halwan Salia, Anantnag, risked his life to save 11 tourists, including children, from the crossfire.
The tourists, all hailing from Chhattisgarh, were visiting the famed tourist spot of Pahalgam when the attack occurred. Nazakat, a seasoned tourist guide, had brought the group to his hometown for a scenic experience. What was meant to be a memorable vacation turned into a nightmare as gunfire echoed across the valley.
“All I could think about was saving them. The children were crying, and fear gripped everyone. Even if it cost me my life, I couldn’t leave them,” said Nazakat, who hasn’t eaten in two days, haunted by the horrifying scenes. He personally ensured the safe evacuation of the group and dropped them at the Srinagar airport.
Tragically, his cousin, Syed Adil Shah, who also tried to help the trapped tourists, lost his life during the attack. “I couldn’t even attend his funeral,” Nazakat said, his voice heavy with grief. “We Kashmiris are known for our hospitality, not for such inhuman acts. These terrorists must be punished. They have no religion, no humanity.”
The survivors from Chhattisgarh expressed deep gratitude to Nazakat and the people of Kashmir. “We will never forget the bravery and kindness shown to us. This attack does not represent Kashmir or its people,” one of them said.
Kashmir, heavily reliant on tourism, now faces another setback as such attacks threaten its peace and economy. Locals strongly condemned the act, stressing that terrorism has no place in the valley.
As the nation mourns the loss of innocent lives, stories like that of Nazakat Ahmad Shah remind us of the courage and compassion that still thrives even in the darkest moments.
