Shaheed Humayun Muzammil Memorial Degree College Anantnag Celebrates 75 Years of Excellence

Anantnag: Shaheed Humayun Muzammil Memorial Government Degree College, Anantnag, celebrated its Platinum Jubilee with great enthusiasm, marking 75 glorious years of academic excellence, culture, and public service. The landmark event brought together eminent academicians, civil servants, alumni, and distinguished guests to honour the college’s legacy and its remarkable contribution to higher education in South Kashmir.
The celebration was graced by Ms. Sakina Itoo, Hon’ble Minister for Health and Medical Education, Social Welfare, and Education, who attended as the Chief Guest. Shri Shantmanu (IAS), Additional Chief Secretary, Higher Education Department, presided as the Guest of Honour. Among other dignitaries present were MLA M.Y. Tarigami (Kulgam), MLA Bashir Ahmed Veeri (Bijbehara-Srigufwara), MLA Abdul Majeed Bhat Larmi (Anantnag-West), MLA Reyaz Ahmad Khan (Shangus-Anantnag East), MLA Zafar Ali Khatana (Kokernag), and Prof. Sheikh Aijaz Bashir, Director Colleges, J&K.
The dignitaries jointly inaugurated newly constructed projects including the Science Block, Badminton Court, and College Canteen, symbolizing the institution’s continuous growth and modernization. The Science Block, equipped with advanced laboratories and smart classrooms, aims to enhance research and learning opportunities for students, while the new sports and welfare facilities promote holistic education.
Addressing the gathering, Minister Sakina Itoo commended the college for its transformative journey from a modest institution to one of the premier centers of learning in South Kashmir. She emphasized the Government’s commitment under Chief Minister Omar Abdullah’s leadership to strengthen higher education, particularly in rural and far-flung areas. She also highlighted the recent posting of over 140 Assistant Professors in peripheral colleges and a 12% rise in student enrolment across J&K, reflecting renewed trust in public education.
The Minister lauded the college’s contribution in producing distinguished alumni who have excelled in various fields. She also presented awards to meritorious students and released publications authored by faculty members.
Earlier, a documentary showcasing the college’s 75-year academic journey was screened. The Platinum Jubilee concluded with cultural performances and a reaffirmation of the college’s commitment to excellence, innovation, and service to society.
