Anantnag:Education and Health Minister Sakina itoo on wednesday renamed PM Shri Government High School Hapatnar, Ashmuqam, as Shaheed Adil Hussain Memorial Government High School in honour of martyr Syed Adil Hussain Shah, who was killed while protecting tourists during the April 22, 2025 Pahalgam terror attack. The attack had claimed the lives of 25 tourists and left several others injured. The renaming ceremony was attended by Altaf Ahmad Kaloo, senior officials of the Education Department, local residents and family members of the martyr.
Speaking on the occasion, Sakina Itoo said the decision to rename the school was aimed at preserving the legacy, bravery and sacrifice of Adil Hussain Shah for future generations. She said his courage during the terror attack had become a symbol of humanity and sacrifice, adding that the government wanted students and young people to remember his contribution and draw inspiration from his life. She said the renaming was not merely a change of title but a tribute to a brave son of Jammu and Kashmir whose actions earned respect across the country.
Addressing the gathering, Altaf Ahmad Kaloo said the martyr’s sacrifice had brought pride and honour to the people of Jammu and Kashmir. He described the presence of Adil Hussain Shah’s parents at the event as an emotional and proud moment for the entire region. Kaloo recalled that Omar Abdullah had personally attended the funeral prayers of the martyr soon after the attack, while Farooq Abdullah later visited the bereaved family and announced that the school would be named after Adil Hussain Shah.
Kaloo said the process of officially renaming a government institution required cabinet approval and departmental procedures, which took some time to complete. He thanked Sakina Itoo for fulfilling the commitment and ensuring that the martyr’s name would remain permanently associated with the institution. He added that whenever sacrifices for humanity and courage are remembered, the name of Adil Hussain Shah would remain among the foremost examples from Jammu and Kashmir.
