Anantnag:National Conference President Farooq Abdullah on Wednesday said his party is awaiting the fulfilment of the Centre’s promise to restore statehood to Jammu and Kashmir, asserting that the demand goes beyond the framing of rules of business.
Speaking to reporters, Abdullah said the restoration of statehood remains a key aspiration of the people of Jammu and Kashmir and expressed hope that the Union Government would honour its commitment on the issue.
“The restoration of statehood to Jammu and Kashmir has been promised, and we are awaiting its fulfilment,” Abdullah said. He added that the National Conference seeks the restoration of full statehood and not merely administrative arrangements such as the rules of business.
The veteran leader further referred to assurances allegedly given by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Chief Minister Omar Abdullah regarding the issue. “Prime Minister Narendra Modi had told Omar Abdullah that whatever promise I have made regarding statehood, I will fulfil it,” he said.
Abdullah expressed confidence that the Centre would stand by its commitment and take steps towards restoring Jammu and Kashmir’s statehood. The demand for statehood has remained a central political issue in the Union Territory since its reorganisation in August 2019.
