15 Sheep Die in Kunzer B’la; Probe Finds Acute Acidosis from Excess Apple Consumption

At least 15 sheep died in Lalpora, Kunzar, Baramulla after consuming excessive apples while grazing in orchards, officials said on Tuesday. The District Sheep Husbandry Officer, Baramulla, constituted a five-member investigation committee to probe the sudden deaths.
The committee, which included Veterinary Assistant Surgeons, inspected the affected flocks, conducted post-mortem examinations, and provided medical support to ailing animals. Their findings attributed the deaths to Acute Acidosis, a metabolic disorder in ruminants triggered by the rapid intake of fermentable carbohydrates.
“Our field investigation and post-mortem findings clearly indicate Acute Acidosis as the cause of mortality. The sheep had consumed a large quantity of apples, which led to a sudden drop in rumen pH and proved fatal,” a member of the investigation team .
Authorities have urged farmers to take preventive measures during the apple harvest season.
“Livestock owners should be extremely cautious while grazing animals in orchards at this time of year. Preventive care, including timely vaccination and deworming, is essential to ensure the health and resilience of flocks,” the District Sheep Husbandry Officer Baramulla advised.
The department has assured farmers of continued veterinary support and awareness campaigns to minimize such risks in the future.
