Srinagar temperature reaches 31.5°C, ‘Heatwave to worsen in coming days’, says MeT

The heatwave sweeping across Jammu Kashmir is intensifying and is expected to worsen over the next few days, the Meteorological Department in Srinagar has said.

Authorities have urged people, especially vulnerable groups such as pregnant women, children, and the elderly, to take necessary precautions and stay adequately hydrated to avoid heat-related health issues.Despite the rising temperatures, rain and thundershowers are forecast to hit some parts of the region from Sunday evening.

On Monday, scattered thundershowers are likely to affect several areas, which may provide some respite from the ongoing heatwave.

Today’s maximum temperatures recorded across the region on Saturday indicate the severity of the heatwave. In the Kashmir division, Srinagar registered 31.5°C, Qazigund 32.0°C, Pahalgam 27.0°C, Kupwara 29.0°C, Kokernag 30.0°C, and Gulmarg 22.2°C.Meanwhile, the Jammu division experienced significantly higher temperatures with Jammu city recording 41.0°C, Katra 37.0°C, Batote 30.9°C, Banihal 30.4°C, and Bhaderwah 30.4°C. In Ladakh, Leh’s maximum temperature was a cooler 19.0°C.

The Meteorological Department has advised residents to remain vigilant and take preventive measures during this period of extreme heat.
